Luano Town Council in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Livestock conducted the first ever registration and free vaccination of dogs in the District. The exercise was carried out in Chikupili Zone covering Masansa, Copper Mine, Busa, Chikupil Central, Kampelembe, Mibanga, Scheme 2, Lumba and Lisimba catchment areas.
This was brought about due to the rampant dog bite cases in the District and also in line with the Control of Dogs Act Cap 247 of the Laws of Zambia which gives us the mandate to control the dogs in the District in order to prevent the occurrence of rabies.
Just in the first quarter of 2019, Luano has recorded 18 cases of dog bites which were reported although there is the possibility that there are more cases that were not reported.
A total number of 1,000 doses of anti-rabies vaccines have since been bought. A total of 501 out of 520 dogs registered were vaccinated. However, the program is yet to be scaled up to the rest of the District since it is divided into four Zones.
However, the Health Inspector Mr. Mbewe Siliuka said that the settlement pattern of the community members as most people are farmers thereby settling in their respective farms and not being clustered together in a central place was a challenge.
